According to Hatha Yogic calendar, both Shishir Ritu, which falls in September and October, are the best time to commence with tenth month yogic practice if one want to attain physical mental and spiritual health. As described in the texts, it is an equipoised nature and as such is one of the best times for performing the yogas of pranayama and asanas.
Another of the most important practices that is taught and developed during this period is pranayama – or more simply, breath control – which is an important part of Hatha Yoga. The Hatha Yoga Pradipika has written in detail about the power of pranayama and how, when performed correctly actually leads to transformation. It goes through how even methods of breathing can help or harm the body, mind and soul. As verse 16 from the text suggests:
प्राणायामेन युक्तेन सर्वरोगक्षयो भवेत् ।
अयुक्ताभ्यासयोगेन सर्वरोगसमुद्भवः ॥16॥
This means ‘Through proper practice of pranayama all diseases are destroyed; through improper practice all diseases are generated.’ Therefore, precision in practice of pranayama is important so as to reap all the benefits from this aspect of yoga. The problem is if they practice it incorrectly, they would develop some imbalances and health problems, so it is important that they are guided by a knowledgeable teacher.
To begin practicing pranayama in Shishir Ritu can go a long way in achieving a natural order of balance in the body which off causes the body to detox, mind to calm down and soul to become sunny. No matter if you are a first time practitioner or have been practicing for several years this season is the best time to up your yoga practice. Usually, pranayama should be practiced according to an individual’s need under supervision to maximize benefits minimizing the risks involved.
Take the best from the season and use it as a way to improve your health and the quality of your life.
