Bhekasana (Frog Pose)—Steps, Benefits, and Precautions.

Bhekasana, or Frog Pose, is backbending deepening into flexibility, strengthening spinal health, and opening up the chest and shoulders. An advanced asana requires firmness and flexibility; therefore, it comes in handy for seasoned practitioners to further their practices. The term Bhekasana has its origins in the Sanskrit Bheka (frog) and Asana (pose), as the position somewhat resembles a frog bent into a sitting posture.

Benefits of Bhekasana

✅ Increases Flexibility—Stretch the hip flexors, quadriceps, and groin muscles for overall mobility.
✅ Strengthening the Spine—Rectifying posture while aiding spinal health.
✅Chest and Shoulders Opening—Expands the rib cage, thus increasing lung capacity and lung opening on breathing.
✅Eases Digestion—Works gently on the abdominal organs for better digestion and metabolism.
✅ Reduces Stress and Fatigue—Discharging tension from the lower back and hips encourages relaxation.

How to do Bhekasana?

1) Lie flat on your stomach, extending your legs.
2) Knees bent, feet drawn close to the buttocks.
3) Reach back with both hands to hold your feet.
4) Press your feet down as you lift your chest and strengthen your back muscles.
5) 20-30 seconds in the pose with deep breathing.
6) Easily release and relax into Child’s Pose.

Cautions & Contraindications –

🚫 Do not perform it if you have knee, lower back, or shoulder injuries.
🚫 Should not be done by pregnant women.
🚫 Always warm up before doing Bhekasana to avoid any strain.

Bhekasana is a difficult yet rewarding asana in terms of strength, flexibility, and awareness. It can further enhance one’s ability to access back bends and attune the entire body to movement quite effectively. Convince oneself by listening to how it feels within their bodies and recording these changes into their subsequent safe and effective practices. 😊🙏
